Jon Jones has written a series of incendiary tweets to shut down the ‘athlete’ rhetoric of title challenger Dominic Reyes ahead of their clash this Sunday at UF 247.
In an interview for the Countdown to UFC 247, Reyes commented on his college football background, saying “just didn’t work out, man” in reference to him not making it to the NFL. Following Reyes’ comments about Jones never having faced a legitimate athlete, this was all Jones needed to unleash.
Jones posted a series of tweets which tore down the ‘athlete’ rhetoric which has been Reyes’ main point of contention in the buildup to their fight.
“He’s fought wrestlers he’s fought strikers but never athletes“ -DR

probably the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a while
DC competed in the NCAA finals and in the Olympics, OSP played Division I football, Bader the current double Champ of Bellator, Vitor crazy speed and explosive, Lyoto had been striking since age 5, Glover was on a 20 fight win streak but none of those guys are athletes I guess https://t.co/EIH0FrQQSL

Dominick Reyes, one of the greatest athletes in Apple Valley history. Being a big fish in a small pond for so long has really gone to his head.

Beating up on cans has got him convinced he’s a better athlete than most of the world. If he was so badass he would’ve won the California state wrestling championships, he would’ve went division one, He would have at least made a practice squad for the NFL. This man is delusional

Every time Jon Jones fights, he is an overwhelming favourite, due to being arguably the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter of all time. Each time, the UFC attempts to build up his new opponent and portray him as a unique and credible challenge to Jones.
This time is no different, as Dominic Reyes’ 12-0 MMA record and collegiate football career are enough for the UFC to pose him as a challenge which Jones has not faced before.
However, after Reyes squeaked past Volkan Oezdimir - a fight which many MMA pundits thought he lost - and KO’d a past-his-prime Chris Weidman, it seems as though Jones is likely to steamroll him like many before.
Jones is getting older, though, and eventually every pack leader succumbs to the younger cubs. UFC 247 airs this Sunday, 8th February, with the main card starting at 4pm NZT.
