Brazilian-born New Zealander Geovana Peres will defend her WBO World Light Heavyweight title on April 4th against Savannah Marshall.

This is the biggest fight for a New Zealand boxer since Joseph Parker took on Anthony Joshua for the Unified World Championship. This will definitely be the hardest fight of Geovana’s career. If she wins the fight, she could possibly get her dream fight against Claressa Shields.

Geovana won her WBO world title back in March 2019, making history for being first New Zealander to win a major women’s world title and being the first person from the New Zealand LGBT Community to win a boxing world title.

In October 2019, Geovana Peres successfully defended her world title against Canadian Claire Hafner. The fight from the beginning was completely one-sided, with Geovana eventually winning by TKO.

Right before the Savannah Marshall fight, Geovana will have reached the milestone of holding a world title for a full year on March 30th. After that, she will have one big challenge on her hands.

Her opponent, Savannah Marshall, is one of the toughest boxers in the women’s division. In the amateurs alone she is a 2010 AIBA World Championships Silver medalist, a 2012 AIBA World Championships Gold medalist, a 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold medalist, a 2016 AIBA World Championships Bronze medallist, and a two-time quarterfinalist at the Olympic games.

She is the only person in the world to have beaten Claressa Sheilds, which happened at the 2012 AIBA World Championships.

As a professional, Savannah Marshall is ranked second in the Light Heavyweight division on Boxrec (behind Geovana Peres), first in IBF, second in WBA, and sixth in WBC.

In 2018, she won the WBA Inter-Continental Female Super Middleweight title against then top-ranked Argentinian boxer Yanina Orozco in Bulgaria. She is undefeated as a professional with eight wins and is ready for her first world title shot.

According to Boxrec’s ‘What If’ page, Geovana Peres has a 78% chance of winning the fight. Savannah Marshall will come in with the height advantage of 182cm with Geovana standing at 169cm tall.

This will be an exciting fight which hopefully will be broadcast in New Zealand on Sky Sports. Stay tuned to Fight News for updates as the fight approaches.
