Scorpion Gym’s Corey Dunn had arguably the hardest route to the final at last night’s Capital Punishment 51 Full Thai rules tournament, but he took out the final with a nasty KO of Jared Everleigh in the final round.
In the first round, Dunn drew undefeated Josh Lay Robertson for his first fight. A close fight ensued, with Corey Dunn edging the win by split decision over three rounds.
In the other bracket, the Fightshop’s Hendrick Mutale was stopped by Jared Everliegh from Mana Muay Thai in the third round, after a close first two. Compared to Dunn’s three-round slugfest, this gave Everleigh arguably the easier path to the final.
In the final bout, Everleigh came out fresh and strong, taking the first round. After some advice from his corner in between rounds, Dunn managed to take the second round, making it one apiece.
In the final round, Dunn’s cardio was on display, as he took the fight to Everleigh, backing him up to the ropes and landing a crushing overhand right which sent Jared wobbling backwards.
Dunn was patient, picking his shots and unloading hard punches to the body before a straight right hand set up a left hook from hell which clipped Everleigh on the chin and sent him crashing to the canvas unable to recover.
Corey Dunn is now the first Ultimate Four-Man Champion. It seems likely that this tournament format will become a regular theme at Capital Punishment events. Look out for the next iteration and also for Dunn defending his title!
