In the first fight on the undercard of Eternal 50 at Sky City Convention Centre this afternoon, Canterbury Fight Centre’s up-and-comer Fergus ‘the Future’ Jenkins defeated steely-faced Ezra Berghan of Core MMA by second-round arm triangle.
Ninteeen-year-old Jenkins (1-0 MMA) was the taller man, with Berghan stockier and more muscular.
Berghan made his MMA debut, originally hailing from American but now fighting out of Core MMA in Hamilton.
The first round saw both men measuring the other with strikes from the outside, before it became a grappling exchange initiated by Jenkins.
The southpaw Berghan managed to keep to his feet, before being taken down near the end of the round by a well-timed level change from Jenkins. Berghan worked back to his feet again, pressuring Jenkins in the stand-up.

In round two, it didn't take Jenkins long to once again change levels and take the fight to the ground, ending up with Berghan’s back.
Jenkins displayed slick jiu-jitsu, sinking the hooks in and resisting Berghan’s attempts to shake him off. Once Jenkins had him flattened out, the end was not long coming.
Berghan turned over and gave up the mount instead of his back, and Jenkins seized upon the arm triangle, sinking it in from mount to get the tap from Berghan.
A slick performance from the youngster. Perhaps his nickname is apt.
