King of Kings 9 - Relentless delivered an international-level fight card on Saturday, October 31, with six new ISKA champions crowned and three fighters qualifying for King in the Ring tournaments.

Every fight on the card was either a title fight, a tag-team title fight, or a King in the Ring qualifier tournament. Rob Horrocks, Charlie Charalambides, and Jabe Tyler all qualified spots in their respective King in the Ring weight divisions.

Fight News' recap of the fights is below:

Title Fights

Sam Haggitt (South Island Lee Gar) def. Shem Murdoch (Dunedin Kickboxing) via TKO round 4

In the main event, Sam "the Hunter" Haggitt scored a TKO victory over Shem "Money" Murdoch to win the New Zealand ISKA 69.5kg K1 rules title. It was a close fight up until the fourth round, where Haggitt stunned Murdoch with a knee to the head, following up with punches to get the TKO win and his first title belt.

Jabe Tyler (Snake Fit / CFC) def. David Bendall (Muay Thai Christchurch) via TKO round 1

Jabe Tyler shocked onlookers with his first-round knockout of experienced kickboxer David Bendall, to win the ISKA South Island 95kg+ Open Weight K1 rules title. Bendall started well, landing leg kicks and avoiding the punch combinations of Tyler.

Two minutes into the first round, after a clinch exchange, Tyler landed a flush left hook that saw Bendall crash backwards to the canvas. Bendall regained his feet but the referee had seen enough, awarding Tyler the victory and qualifying him for the next 100kg King in the Ring tournament.

Noah Shepherd after winning the ISKA 84.6kg K1 rules title on Saturday night.

Noah Shepherd (Fight Science Queenstown) def. Marcus Tuuli (Snake Fit / CFC) via KO round 2

This fight was chaos from the outset, with Tuuli aggressively pursuing Shepherd throwing bombs with both hands. Shepherd weathered the storm and in the second round landed a crushing knee to the jaw of Tuuli, face-planting him to the canvas unable to recover in time. Noah Shepherd is the new South Island ISKA 84.6 K1 Rules champion.

Jesse Morrow-Wilson (Tihipuke Muay Thai) def. Kieran Lock-Cullimore (South Island Lee Gar) via TKO round

Jesse Morrow-Wilson put on a technical masterclass, taking home the ISKA New Zealand 75kg Full Thai Rules title. He dropped Lock-Cullimore with a left hook in round two, who quickly regained his feet, but Morrow-Wilson poured on the pressure, opening a nasty cut on the forehead. The cut was deemed too severe to continue, awarding the win and NZ title belt to Morrow-Wilson.

Matt Sutherland (Muay Thai Christchurch) def. Mandela Ale (Beyond Gym Auckland) via split decision

This fight was close, with both men having success. Ale had missed the weight limit at the weigh in, so was ineligible for the title, but it was Matt Sutherland who took a narrow victory and the ISKA New Zealand 81.4kg Full Thai rules title.

Lapa Halangahu (Riverside Kickboxing / Otepoti Boxing) def. Vin Jones (South Island Lee Gar) via unanimous decision

Lapa Halangahu utilised defensive head movement and a vicious outside low kick to defeat Vin Jones by unanimous decision to win the ISKA South Island 88.2kg K1 Rules title.

King in the Ring Qualifier Tournaments

Rob Horrocks and team-mates after he won the King of Kings 68kg four-man tournament.

68kg Four-Man Tournament

Rob Horrocks defeated John Pyers in the tournament finale to win the four-man 68kg tournament, cementing his place in the next 68kg King in the Ring. In his semi-final, Horrocks had a banger of a fight against Charlie Baker, dropping him with body shots in round one before weathering the comeback storm of Baker in the later rounds.

In the opposite bracket, John Pyers handily defeated Vinnie Lucas by unanimous decision, advancing to the finale where he lost a competitive fight to the champ Horrocks.

62kg Three-Man Tournament

With Rick Curline injured, this 62kg four-man turned into a three-man, with Charlie Charalambides getting the lucky draw and advancing directly to the final. The first fight was chaos, with Mike Beavington dropping Shaun Spencer early, before Spencer rallied and inflicted a cut on the face of Beavington.

Given the tournament format, Beavington's corner called the fight, giving Spencer a path to the tournament final where he was quickly stopped by Charalambides' leg kicks. Charlie Charalambides will compete in the next 62kg King in the Ring tournament.

Tag-Team Title Fights

Both of these fights were contested team-versus-team over five four-minute rounds, for King of Kings tag-team titles.

62kg Tag-Team Title Bout

Macca Jean (Combat Centre Auckland) and Asher Bennie (Lucky 9) def. Sara Jarden and Hayley Minchington (South Island Lee Gar) via round 5 TKO

Asher Bennie and Macca Jean defeated the South Island Lee Gar team to win the 62kg King of Kings tag-team title. Bennie and Jean took over later in the fight, hurting both their opponents before Jean landed a spinning back kick to the liver of Minchington in the final round, from which she couldn't recover.

57kg Tag-Team Title Bout

Margaret Rouvi (DKB) and Ayisha Abied (Beyond Gym Auckland) def. Kate O'Neill and Tammi Murphy (Proactive Martial Arts Riccarton) via TKO round 3

The Proactive team were competitive in the first rounds, but later Rouvi and Abied began to take over, culminating in round 3 with Abied hurting Murphy with a liver kick which saw her flee to the corner to tag in her team-mate.

When O'Neill entered, Abied continued the onslaught, unleashing combination punches on O'Neill and forcing the referee to step in for the 10-count. The ref had seen enough though, and called the fight off, leaving Rouvi and Abied the victorious team.
